Mr Khan commenced ophthalmology training in February 1998 in the West Indies. He continued to train in the UK from the start of this millennium, and completed both Basic and Higher Surgical Training in Ophthalmology (London and KSS Deanery & Yorkshire and Humber Deanery).
During this period he entered part-time research in Endophthalmitis at the Institute of Ophthalmology/ Moorfields Eye Hospital (MEH), and in Gene therapy to the cornea at King's College London. In addition, he was an undergraduate tutor for medical students (Royal Free Hospital, London) in ophthalmology and developed a keen interest in teaching and delivering lectures/tutorials.
During this research period I was as an Honorary Fellow on the Cornea/External Eye Disease unit & Laser Refractive Surgery unit at MEH under Professor DS Gartry. This allowed me to develop skills in managing anterior segment pathologies and basic surgical skill in this area. This skill was further enhanced when I worked as a registrar on Professor JK Dart Corneal service at MEH and as a SpR/Fellow on the Corneal/Laser Refractive unit at St. James' University Hospital.
Upon completion of my CCT in 2009, I worked as a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist at York Teaching Hospital for a period of 14 months. This was a general ophthalmology job with Cornea/ Oculoplastic interest. I performed high volume cataract operating lists weekly, under topical anaesthesia. There was an additional need for glaucoma management and I incorporated this into my weekly timetable. He then developed an additional interest in glaucoma and pursued a fellowship with Mr Manners at York Hospital to enhance my skill in glaucoma management/surgery. Mr Khan subsequently worked as a Substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist at County Durham and Darlington Foundation NHS Trust providing cataract, cornea/refractive & glaucoma care for 23 months. This was a very busy job and I performed a weekly high volume cataract list and a weekly subspecialty list (general anaesthesia cataract cases, glaucoma and corneal procedures). During this period I served as Clinical Audit Lead and Clinical Governance Lead. I delivered alternate weekly teaching on glaucoma & corneal/refractive disorders to junior doctors in the department.
These qualities have proven to be of great asset in my present job as a substantive consultant at Bradford Royal Infirmary providing cataract, corneal & glaucoma care to a high volume of patients and supervising/teaching junior doctors. I have publications in peer-reviewed journals and presented research findings at national/international meetings. I enjoy reading journal articles to continually improve my knowledge and provide better care to my patients. I wish to extend my expertise in these chosen sub-specialty areas to patients at the Yorkshire Clinic.
