Clinical interests

Mr James Tyler's interests are in upper limb surgery, he specaialises in planned and trauma surgery of the upper limb. This includes the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of shoulder and elbow problems, both conditions that are chronic and conditions related to injury.

He enjoy's working with athletes and helping them manage their upper limb injuries.

He regularly treats:
Shoulder: Sub acromial pain (impingement/bursitis), rotator cuff tears, frozen shoulder, calcific tenodonopathy, Shoulder instability (dislocations and subluxations). SLAP tears, Acromio-clavicular (ACJ) pathology (arthritis and dislocations). He also treats fractures around the shoulder including clavicle, scapular and humerus.

Elbow: Medial and lateral epicondylitis (golfer's and tennis elbow), cubital tunnel syndrome (trapped ulna nerve), elbow arthritis, and elbow fracture sand dislocations. He also treats biceps tendon ruptures.

Academic Background

Qualifications:BSc, MB ChB, PG Dip (SEM), MSc (Tr and Orth), MRCS, FRCS (Tr and Orth) Mr Tyler completed his Higher Orthopaedic training in the South East Thames rotation, which included periods in Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital and at Kings College Hospital in London. He then sought fellowship level training in Upper Limb surgery. He first went to Australia to the Perth Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Centre for a very sought after Sports Orthopaedic Fellowship. He completed the prestigious St George's Upper Limb Fellowship in London. Mr James Tyler was the Hand Fellow at Guy's and St Thomas' in London. All of this experience has enabled him to become an expert in arthroscopic and open surgery of the shoulder and elbow including rotator cuff repairs and stabilisations. Plus shoulder and elbow joint replacement surgery. He has obtained a Masters degree in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery through the University of Brighton and a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine through the University of Bath.

Mr Tyler has published book chapters, scientific articles and has presented at national and international meetings.
